Alvaro Pierri was born in Montevideo,
Uruguay to a musical family and was taught from an early age music and
guitar. He completed his studies at the Uruguayan National Institute of
Musicology and under Abel Carlevaro and Guido Santorsola. He participated
in international guitar competitions where he won numerous first prizes
including the gold medal and first prize at the 18th Paris International Guitar
Competition, Radio France.
Alvaro Pierri now teaches at the
University of Quebec in Montreal, at McGill University and at Mozarteum in
Salzburg, as well as conducting masterclasses and participating in festivals
across the world.
Professor Pierri pursues a very
active career as a soloist and with orchestras and chamber groups playing
troughout Europe, Japan and North and South America. He has given world
premiers of works by composers such as Brouwer, Santorsola, Carlevaro, Rougier,
Gonzales and others, many of these specially composed for him. As a
chamber musician he has performed with numerous artists such as Astor Piazzolla,
felow Uruguayan guitarist Eduardo Fernandez and Leo Brouwer.
His discrography includes 12 CDs and
his recordings have been nominated five times for the coveted FELIX award for
the best classical CD of the year, a prize which he has won twice.

will hold masterclasses on the 16th and 17th of May at the Recital Hall of the
City Hall. Attendance to these masterclasses will be free of charge but
