Marc-Andre Hamelin

French-Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin’s flourishing international career sees him appearing not only throughout North America and Europe but also in Australasia and the Far East. Although he had made his name playing rare and adventurous repertoire, his output now also embraces music from the classical and romantic periods. Highlights of his recent and forthcoming concerto engagements include performances of Beethoven’s Emperor with the Tampere Philharmonic and Vancouver Symphony, Brahms’ 2nd concerto with the Adelaide, Kansas City and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestras, the Tokyo Philharmonic and Ulster Orchestra and Rachmaninov’s 3rd piano concerto with the Bern Philharmonic and OSI Lugano.

His repertoire extends from Mendelssohn, Mozart and Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony to Saint-Saens, Shostakovich and Stravinsky. He will be playing the Gershwin concerto in Ottawa, Ravel’s concerto for the left hand in Santa Ana, California where also he gave the world première of Kevin Volans’ Piano Concerto No 2 with the San Francisco Symphony. Other orchestras he works with include the Helsinki, London and Malaysian Philharmonic orchestras; the Detroit, Lahti, Melbourne, Montreal, Pacific, Pittsburgh, Quebec, Singapore, St. Louis and Toronto Symphony orchestras and the NAC Ottawa and RAI Turin orchestras.

Marc-André Hamelin appears regularly in the International Piano Series at London’s South Bank Centre and the London Pianoforte Series at the Wigmore Hall. He plays annually in the Herkulessaal in Munich and has given a series of six recitals in Tokyo entitled 200 Years of Pianism with Marc-André Hamelin. During the 2007/08 season he will be giving his Haydn, Chopin, Debussy programme at the Lincoln Center, New York; the Tchaikovsky Hall, Moscow; Wigmore Hall, London; and in the recital series at Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. He is also invited to give recitals at the 92nd Street Y in New York, and in Bilbao, Copenhagen, Florence, Marseille, Milan, Perugia, Philadelphia, Quebec, Rome and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Under his exclusive contract with Hyperion, Marc-André Hamelin’s eclectic recordings range from concertos by Bernstein, Bolcom, Korngold, Anton Rubinstein, Shchedrin and Shostakovich to solo discs of Alkan, Godowsky, Grainger, Kapustin, Liszt, Ornstein, Reger, Roslavets, Rzewski, Schumann, Szymanowski and Villa Lobos. As well as the complete sonatas of both Medtner and Scriabin, he has recorded Albeniz’ Iberia and Espagna; Ives’ Concord Sonata coupled with the Barber Sonata, and The Composer-Pianists: from Alkan to Hamelin. His most recent releases from Hyperion are the Brahms 2nd piano concerto with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Litton and a double CD of Haydn Sonatas.

His recording of the complete Godowsky Studies on Chopin’s Études won the 2000 Gramophone Instrumental Award and in December 2006 he was awarded the German Record Critic’s Prize in Berlin (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik).

Marc-André Hamelin studied at the Vincent d'Indy School of Music and Temple University in Philadelphia. His principal teachers were Yvonne Hubert, Harvey Wedeen and Russell Sherman. In 2005 he was honoured to be made an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Quèbec; the following year he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada.
